RCC Bridge Design : Mannual & Software Approaches.

Bridge Engineering Class Notes:

Bridge Design:
A bridge, in my opinion is not just an structure that provide passes over an obstacle without disturbing the way under it, but in fact is like the backbone for engineers working in the field of transportation, structure & others. It is probably the most studied civil engineering topic throughout the world & current advancement in modelling, design construction methodology in this sector is somehow like decorative cosmetic for engineers. I strongly believe "A Bridge should either be beautiful or not visible while travelling through a road". It's just the love for bridge structure, its interrelated elements are not only limited to aesthetic. In fact embraces dynamic variables related to structural, geotechnical, hydrological, socio-environmental, economic situation and construction methodology & capability of the personals involved in this sector.
In my quick-sense, bridge design is all about defining desired geometry, assigning & analyzing material suitability for stress functions induced due to combination of load function with its compliance to the Geo-technical & hydrological situation. It's about selection of locational geometry, analyzing configuration and ensuring constructability and sustainability for designed period for functions it is constructed.
In Nepal, Bridge design is yet 100 years back wrt world due to construction capacity of contractors, financing priority of department, design philosophy and many more. Engineer's here practice bridge design by manual excel computation with excessive factor of safety, that may be the cause bridges seldom failed here due to structural cause. Most of bridge failure case in Nepal is due to river morphology and improper geo-technical investigation.

What are the designing options in Nepal for designer:
  • Manual Excel based computation : most preferred here may be because the personals involved in checking process and approving it prefers that approach or yet the designers are not liable for its consequences.
  • Modelling Approach : A series of structural design software are being used here, like STAADPro/SAP/CSi Bridge and other Finite Element based software. Although Bridge specific softwares like MiDAS/CSIBridge/BIM etc is available with stage moderating capacity, they are not yet believed here in lag of contractor's confidence or risk sharing ignorance. Another cause is yet we are dependent on IRC provisions and following the Working Stress Method.
Hence, I shall be explaining different design approaches and their comparative adaptability in current scenario:

Mannual Computation Approach of Bridge Design:

I would like to illustrate it with some manual calculations preferred for comparison: I am customizing my excel design sheets for all possible loading, combination of foundation, bearing types, so would be updating with global academic literature, hence its just comparing the relations till date. I am yet working on it to make user friendly and would like to cross-verify from well known designer here. Some components are knowingly kept pending for yet.

Structural Modelling Approach of Bridge Design:  To be continued for long time to complete it.

A. CSi Bridge : Where to find it & How do it work?

CSi Bridge is a software for finite element analysis of motorable bridge. It is an American Software developed by CSi.
It is illegal to use cracked version of software, most of the people are looking for that in search engine and also you can find too many source link for eg. (Click here to download). But these links are not working mostly with license error like in picture. One of the verified link of working software is attached here.
How to download CSi Bridge, with crack link.
